The World of Jadeite

Translucency

Translucency describes how light travels through material rather than only reflecting from its surface. In a finished jadeite form, the effect is influenced by thickness, internal structure, cut, polish, setting and viewing conditions. A dramatic backlit image is informative, but it is not a complete quality verdict.

A practical lens

What to notice

  1. Compare reflected light with transmitted light.

  2. Notice how thin and thick areas respond differently.

  3. Consider polish, curvature and setting around the material.

  4. Treat backlighting as one observation, not a universal grade.

Light enters the form

Some light reflects at the surface while some enters the material. What returns to the eye depends on the path light can take and on the geometry of the finished piece.

Thickness and cut

A thinner edge may seem more luminous than a deeper centre. Curves, windows and polished planes can direct light differently even within the same object.

View in more than one condition

Diffuse daylight, directional light and backlight reveal different aspects. A balanced understanding comes from comparing conditions without treating one photograph as decisive.

The GREIGN Standard

One standard, considered through translucency.

GREIGN considers translucency in relationship with colour, texture, proportion and intended form. The same high-quality jade standard applies across all three lines, even when scale and design create different experiences of light.
