Caring for Jade Jewellery

Cleaning, storage and signs that your jewellery needs a professional inspection.

Know the whole piece

A jewel may combine jade with metal, other stones and different construction details. Care should account for the whole object. Keep any supplied instructions where you can find them, and ask for clarification if you are uncertain which method applies.

GIA’s jade care guidance distinguishes between material and treatment conditions. Avoid choosing a cleaning method solely because it is described as suitable for jade in general. The information for the individual jewel is the more useful starting point.

Keep a gentle routine

After wearing, take a moment to look at the piece before putting it away. A soft cloth may be appropriate where the supplied instructions allow it. Store pieces separately in suitable soft compartments so that they are not rubbing against one another.

GIA advises against steam and ultrasonic cleaning for treated jade and identifies warm, soapy water as the safest general option for jade. A complete jewel may require different handling because of its setting or other materials. Follow its specific guidance and ask before soaking or using equipment.

Pause when something changes

If a stone seems loose, a fastening behaves differently or a piece has received an impact, stop wearing it and seek advice. Describe what happened and when you first noticed the change. Clear photographs may help with an initial conversation, but cannot replace an inspection when one is needed.

Keep purchase information and any service correspondence together. A small, consistent record makes later questions easier to answer. Store the instructions with those records so you can check them before cleaning or arranging a repair.
